Sanjay Leela Bhansali Pan-India’s most celebrated producer-director and music composer, celebrates his 62nd birthday on 24 February
Acknowledged for his over-the-top lavish sets, detailed direction and refined storyline, he is the proud recipient of some prestigious Awards and accolades. He is well acclaimed for his films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Padmaavat, and Gangubai Kathiawadi to name a few. However, his journey in the film industry wasn’t a cake walk. He reeled through tough phase.
Pathetically, several failures pushed his family to struggle financially. His mother was instrumental in taking care of the family and he initially lived in a small room in a chawl.
He embarked on his career as an assistant director and later ventured out to make films on his own.
The year 1996 saw his directorial debut with Khamoshi: The Musical.
With films such as Devdas, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, he has been instrumental in taking Indian cinema on the global map. The film was also nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Film Not in English.
His film Black, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji and inspired by the life of Helen Keller, ranked fifth in Time’s “10 Best Movies of the Year 2005″ (Europe) among films from around the world.
Over the years, Sanjay Leela Bhansali emerged as a music director.
The filmmaker received the Padma Shri award in 2015. He has won 38 awards in total, including National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Mirchi Music Awards, Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards, and Zee Gold Awards.
*Gangubai Kathiawali: It is a biographical crime film based on the true story of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, The film, based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s book is a must-see for fans of both Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt.
*Padmavat: The period drama is one of the most expensive and controversial productions. It stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor in the key roles, and notwithstanding criticism for its title and plot, the film was immensely lauded by fans.
*Bajirao Mastani: The historical romance drama is inspired by Nagnath S Inamdar’s fictional novel Rau. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, starred Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra as the leads.
*Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: The love story includes Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn in the key parts. The musical showcased lavish locations Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Budapest. The heartbreaking tale is still revered as a classic for movie enthusiasts.
*Devdas: It was based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel. Sanjay Leela Bhansali demonstrated his talent in the film using a variety of visual elements. Actors like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and Shah Rukh Khan only enhanced the film.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Upcoming Project
Love And War announced in 2024 brings together Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal on screen for the first time and the actors are currently on shoot for the film. The release date is yet to be finalized.
