Pak alrounder Zaheer Abbas shares his association with Sunil Gavaskar

Recently, Pakistan’s alrounder Zaheer Abbas shared his association with Sunil Gavaskar- loved by everyone in the cricketing world

He said that like him, all cricket lovers in Pakistan , too , fell in love with Sunil Gavaskar much before they actually saw him in action. They first read a news in 1971 that a young Indian batsman had batted like a champion in the West Indies. And it was Sunil Gavaskar. Incidentally , Gavaskar scored 774 runs in only four Test matches. This was no joke as nobody had quite managed to dominate the Caribbean pace-battery on their own pitches. So , they all were very curious to see him.

Undoubtedly, Gavaskar was one of the greatest batsmen of their era. He had Supreme ability and an impeceae technique. After Sunil’s amazing debut in the West Indies , cricketers all over the world ,more so in the subcontinent , were soon trying to copy his batting style.

Apart, he was also a great slip fielder. At the crease , he was very determined and had great concentration as he was much aware of the art of building an innings. He could occupy the crease for as long as he wanted. Nobody can question his sincerity on a cricket field.

It was very much evident in the 1985 World Championahip of cricket in Australia just how good a cricket-brain he possessed.
He led India to victory in the final against Pakistan. It is a pity that Sunil gave up the captaincy after that game.

Zaheer mentioned that he was much pleased and proud that they could play against each other and much happier that on most of the occasions they won against Sunil’s India as it had a better team. Yet Sunil scored heavily against us. That is why he is still the most talked-about Indian cricketer in Pakistan.
