Ajay Devgn’s “Son of Sardaar 2” disappoints at box-office
Notably, in 2025, several films manifested magic at the box office, with some made on modest budgets and others involving heavy investments. However, Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2, made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, turned out to be a major disappointment. Within just four days of release, the film collapsed at the box office, failing to live up to expectations.
The comedy-drama released on August 1 with Ajay Devgn in the lead role also features Ravi Kishan, Roshni Walia, Mrunal Thakur, Sanjay Mishra, Vindu Dara Singh, Deepak Dobriyal, Kubbra Sait, Chunky Pandey, Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa, and the late Mukul Dev.
Notwithstanding boasting an ensemble of stars, the film struggled to hold the audience’s interest.
While Son of Sardaar 2 had star power, the story failed to connect. The film received mixed reviews from critics, and audiences too were left unimpressed, which directly impacted its box office collection. The weak storyline overshadowed the performances and ensemble cast, leading to poor word of mouth.
The movie was a sequel to the 2012 hit Son of Sardaar. After 13 years, the makers attempted to cash in on the success of the original, which had featured Ajay Devgn alongside Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha. Unfortunately, the sequel could not replicate the charm or success of its predecessor.
From day one of its release, the film delivered underwhelming figures. It opened with Rs 7.50 crore on day one, followed by Rs 8.25 crore on the second day, and Rs 9 crore on the third. The three-day total stayed dismally low, leaving both the trade and fans disappointed.
On its fourth day, the downfall became even more evident. Collections dropped by a staggering 77 per cent, with the film earning only Rs 2 crore on its first Monday. The numbers showed no significant improvement afterwards, making it clear the film would not recover its cost.
By the end of its run, Son of Sardaar 2 managed only Rs 43.24 crore net in India, while its worldwide collection stood at Rs 60.9 crore, less than half its budget. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the film’s performance left a massive gap between production cost and earnings, cementing its status as one of the biggest box office failures of 2025.
