Naushad rejected 105 tunes before finalisingsong for Mughal-e-Azam

Undoubetdly, Music has been the soul of Hindi cinema (Bollywood)
since its first sound film in 1931. While countless songs have been created over the years, some have truly struck a chord with audiences.
One such timeless classic is Mughal-e-Azam’s Jab Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, released over six-decades ago and has since turned out to be a cult favourite.

Notably, this iconic song was chosen by legendary music composer Naushad only after rejecting 105 other compositions.
Filmed on the legendary actors Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, the song emerged as an instant hit.

Markedly, Madhubala’s flawless dance moves, expressive eyes, and unparalled beauty still make hearts race. Behind this masterpiece was the voice of the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar.

It would be of surprise to learn that Mughal-e-Azam lyricist Shakeel Badayuni wrote 105 songs that were rejected. It was only on his 106th attempt that music composer Naushad eventually approved the song.
Lata Mangeshkar lent her melodious voice to the 6-minute-16-second song, and together, the iconic trio scripted history.

With its larger-than-life scale, emotional storyline, stellar performances, and soulful music,
Mughal-e-Azam emerged as a cult classic that continues to resonate with audiences even today.

Made on a then staggering budget of
₹ 1.5 crore, it was the most expensive Bollywood film at that time around.
The film went on to break multiple records, emerging as the highest-grossing movie and enjoying one of the longest theatrical runs in Indian cinema history.

Even decades later, the lyrics and visuals of “Jab Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya” remain etched in the hearts and minds of fans.
