KJo calls future of Dharma Productions
corporate-driven entity
Veteran filmmaker Karan Johar has called the future of Dharma Productions as a strategic, growth-oriented, and corporate-driven entity after the 50% stake sale to entrepreneur Adi Poonawalla’s Serene Productions. The ₹1,000 crore deal was not due to financial crisis, but a move for expansion and diversification into digital, streaming, and theatrical platforms.
Karan amidst an interview stated that the alliance with Poonawalla is a “business deal” focused on commercial viability rather than a permanent, emotional, or familial legacy, suggesting a future exit by the investor is expected.
After the deal, Dharma is placing higher emphasis on commercial success. Karan also went on to admit that he will be more cautious over the production of critically acclaimed but financially non-viable films.
Adding that he retains creative control, with himself and Apoorva Mehta and continue to lead the creative and business sides, respectively.
About the future outlook, he said the goal is to evolve into a larger corporate entity, reducing reliance on box office volatility by leveraging digital revenue and expanding the brand.
Once Johar joked that he is the “worst negotiator” but confident that the alliance will turn his company into a much larger entity.
