PM Modi sharpens attack on Mamata over President Murmu’s Santhal event row
Prime Minister Modi on Sunday once again trained his guns on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee over President Droupadi Murmu’s recent displeasure regarding alleged “mismanagement” at a Santhal community event.
Prime Minister Modi has sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), regarding the alleged mismanagement and “insult” to President Droupadi Murmu amidst a Santhal community event in West Bengal.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed displeasure over the last-minute change of venue for the 9th International Santhal Conference in the Darjeeling district, a move for which she reportedly blamed the West Bengal administration.
Reportedly, PM Modi has termed the developments “shameful and unprecedented,” accusing the TMC government of “grave insults” to the President, the Constitution, and tribal communities. He claimed the TMC boycotted the event and that their “arrogance of power” would be shattered by the people of Bengal.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hit back, accusing the BJP of “using” the President to “malign” the state and advised President Murmu not to “engage in politics”.
This political confrontation comes ahead of the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with the BJP looking to unseat the TMC.
Earlier in 2026,
PM Modi also targeted the Mamata-led government over the handling of crime against women, specifically mentioning the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case and atrocities in Sandeshkhali.
