Mirroring Maharashtra’s initiative mandating Marathi for all official state communications and in schools from 1st to 10th standard West Bengal makes Bengali mandatory for all official state communications.
This language policy directive which comes into full effect on September 1, 2026 was announced in the state Assembly by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari following a recommendation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
It mandates that all citizen services, digital portals, police services, and internal government correspondence be conducted in Bengali.
