In a scathing indictment of India’s democratic machinery, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a frontal assault on the integrity of the nation’s electoral processes, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged institutional compromises.
At an explosive press conference on September 24, Gandhi sounded the alarm on what he termed the mysterious “disappearance of anti-incumbency” across several critical states. He pointed to damaging reports of intense internal dissent within the Election Commission of India, specifically highlighting formal objections and notes raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi over controversial electoral-roll decisions and the Special Intensive Revision process. Gandhi asserted that these internal fractures expose systemic vulnerabilities and undermine the foundational fairness of recent elections.
While the Election Commission has scrambled to downplay the crisis characterising the friction as routine institutional deliberations and insisting that final orders were unanimous the opposition contends that the panel’s credibility has been severely fractured. Gandhi’s sharp escalation intensifies national scrutiny on the poll body, shifting the political discourse from routine partisan rivalry to a direct challenge against the trustworthiness of India’s democratic guardrails.
