Even the Indian Cinema’s Legend Amitabh Bachchan, renowned for silencing silver-screen villains with a single commanding dialogue, once had to yield to a strictly traditional parental decree. Following the monumental success of the action-drama film Zanjeer, the young superstar and his co-star Jaya Bhaduri planned a celebratory holiday to London. However, the legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan placed a very firm, beautifully poetic, yet unyielding condition on the excursion. He informed his son that traveling abroad together as an unmarried couple was out of the question, delivering a clear ultimatum: if they wanted to visit London together, they had to marry first.
Abiding by the final authority of his father, the couple quickly set a wedding date for June 3, 1973. The grand superstar, who would later rule Bollywood as the ultimate rebel figure, quietly submitted to family tradition.
The wedding was organized in a modest, private ceremony at a family friend’s apartment in Malabar Hill, Mumbai, away from the typical media frenzy. Right after the simple traditional rituals were completed, the newlywed couple packed their bags and boarded their flight to London that very same evening, turning their contested holiday into an immediate honeymoon.
This enduring piece of Bollywood history remains a heartwarming reminder that even the industry’s biggest icons are ultimately bound by the love and strict guidance of their parents.
