“Joshila”, a popular film from the early 70s featuring
Dev Anand and Hema Malini, persists to hold its legacy even after 50 years. The film faced comparisons to the iconic “Johny Mera Naam”.
There was a conflict over money in the midst of Vijay Anand and Gulshan Rai, resulting in Yash Chopra taking over as the director. Regardless of l its success, Joshila remains cooly forgotten, with its songs being the only memorable aspect of the film.
Recalling the 50 years of Navketan’s “Joshila” Vijay Anand had asked for more fees than Dev Anand and was replaced by Yash Chopra.
The film featuring Dev Anand and Hema Malini was a popular film back in the early 70s.
Even though the film’s memory may have faded in the subsequent years, the film’s legacy remains undeniable,
50 years following its release.
According to Film expert Dilip Thakur the film’s release back in 1973 was compared to Dev-Hema’s much more iconic Johny Mera Naam from a few years ago.
The perceptions that were prevalent at the time of the release Dilip Thakur articulates that when Joshila had released, there was a big hangover of Johny Mera Naam, which proved massive hit and was still going strong.
Distributor and Filmmaker Gulshan Rai had turned producer with Johny Mera Naam under his Trimurti Films banner. After Johny Mera Naam, director Vijay Anand (Dev Anand’s brother) had made Tere Mere Sapne, which did not work. Vijay Anand and Gulshan Rai were coming together for Joshila, but they had a conflict over money which was widely written about.
Gulshan Rai took the film away from Vijay Anand and handed it over to Yash Chopra.
At that time around, Yash Chopra was making Daag with Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore and the mahurat was held at Rajkamal Studio where he had his office as well.
Daag and Joshila were made simultaneously. Daag was released on April 27, 1973 and Joshila was released on October 18 the same year on a Thursday, which was Diwali.”
Thakur believes Dev-Hema’s movie got the kind of well deserved reception. He adds, that Joshila was an average film. This was the second time in Yash Chopra’s career that he had two releases in the same year.
In 1969, he had two releases Aadmi Aur Insaan and Ittefaq. Ittefaq was a small film, whereas Aadmi Aur Insaan was delayed. Both films were produced by BR Films.
Following Joshila’s release, Yash Chopra immediately jumped into the mahurat of his next film Deewaar.
Thakur further revealed that “Deewaar was released in January 1975. Gulshan Rai was Chopra’s distributor on later releases like Trishul (1978) and Kabhi Kabhie (1976) but then later on, they parted ways.
After Vijay Anand was dropped from Joshila he made Chhupa Rustam, which also featured Dev Anand and Hema Malini in the lead, under Navketan banner. He also directed Blackmail for producer
Both films were released in 1973.
The most unique thing about Joshila is the fact that Yash Chopra directed Dev Anand. Nobody really remembers this iconic director-actor combination notwithstanding the film’s songs being successful.” Kiska Rasta Dekhe and Sharma Na Yoon were the most popular songs from the film.
