Veteran actor Delhi Ganesh passes away at 80

A big setback for the South Indian Film industry with the passing away of Veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh on Saturday night, following health complications.
He was 80.

In his over four decades film career, Delhi Ganesh has acted in over 400 films, emerging as one of Tamil cinema’s most loved actors. Many may not know that Delhi Ganesh was also a part of Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express.
The late actor shared screen space with none other than Shah Rukh Khan in the popular 2013 film.

A throwback image of him alongside Shah Rukh Khan has been circulating on social media, reminding fans of his memorable cameo in the movie.

Chennai Express was a major commercial success and became one of the highest-grossing films of 2013. The film, which featured Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, follows the story of a man who accidentally gets caught up in a series of misadventures while travelling from Mumbai to Rameswaram.

Delhi Ganesh’s family confirmed the news of his death in a statement, saying, they deeply regret to inform that their father Delhi Ganesh passed away on 9th November at around 11 PM.” His mortal remains have been placed in Ramapuram, Chennai and his final rites are scheduled for November 11.

Ganesh made his film debut in 1976 with Pattina Pravesam, directed by the legendary K. Balachander, who also gave him the stage name “Delhi Ganesh.”

His breakthrough came in the 1980s, and while he briefly played the lead in Engamma Maharani (1981), it was his extensive work as a supporting actor that earned him widespread recognition and affection. Some of his most iconic roles came in films like Sindhu Bhairavi Nayakan Michael Madana Kama Rajan Aahaa and Thenali.

Ganesh’s contributions to Tamil cinema were widely acknowledged. He was honoured with the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in Pasi (1979), and in 1994, he was honoured with the Kalaimamani award by then-Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in recognition of his excellence in the arts.

Ganesh has also done television and short films. His cameo as Alfred Pennyworth in the short film What If Batman Was From Chennai was particularly unforgettable. He also appeared in the 2016 thriller Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, directed by Karthick Naren, where his brief but impactful role was well received.

Notedly, Ganesh was a member of the Delhi-based theatre troupe Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha.
