No doubt Mumbai’s famous South Indian food is relished by people from all walks of life, and even the city’s rich and famous. One among them is Indian Entertainment Industry’s legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan.

Their favourite South Indian restaurant is the Cafe Madras in Matunga. Sometime back, the father-son duo were spotted relushing mouth-watering south Indian delicacies at the Cafe Madras, one of the most famous South Indian food joints in Matunga.

Social media videos showed fans going berserk as the Bachchans stepped out of the humble yet famous establishment.

As many culinary enthusiasts will attest to, Mumbai’s Matunga locality, referred to by many as ‘Mini Madras'(Chennai) is renowned for its South Indian food, and Cafe Madras is among some of the famous eateries, because of its reputation of preparing authentic South Indian cuisine, whose taste and authenticity has remained consistent for more than 80 years.

Cafe Madras was established by its founder, Gopal Purshottam Kamath, in 1940, and now his grandsons, the third-generation of the Kamath family is running the establishment, offering its famous Udupi cuisine to commoners and celebrities alike, using family recipes that have been carefully preserved since its inception.

The primary appeal of Cafe Madras lies in the authenticity of Udupi cuisine that the restaurant offers at reasonable prices. A meal for two can cost as low as Rs 250, making it a preferred destination for foodies who flock the humble eatery and often share tables and enjoy a meal with complete strangers because of limited space.

Cafe Madras has a rich menu that includes specialties such as Neer Masala with Stew, Idli Butter Podi, Ragi Masala Dosa, Pessarattu Dosa, and Madras Dahi Misal, and savory South Indian filter coffee.
According to various reports, Cafe Madras has an annual turnover in crores of rupees, and has also expanded its business in the retail sector. In 2016, the owners opened a retail store, their first, where several different kinds of snacks, pickles, coffee powder and masalas are sold. They also launched another retail outlet Cornucopia, that aims to promote local food businesses.
