Looking back: Writer Robin recounts SRK put condition before signing “Baazigar”
Robin Bhatt, younger brother of Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt recently recounted that Shah Rukh Khan put a condition before inking the deal with producers of the Abbas-Mustan directorial “Baazigar” as
Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan refused to do the film.
At that time around itself even when he wasn’t famous Shah Rukh Khan cared a damn to hear the second half of the film and agreed to collaborate only if the character stayed villainous.
Shah Rukh Khan was just in the second year of his Bollywood career when he signed on to play an anti-hero in Abbas Mustan’s Baazigar. The film transformed his career trajectory and turned out to be a blockbuster hit at the box office. But he was not always the first choice for the film.
Baazigar was first offered to Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, but they refused to take up the film, which eventually landed with Shah Rukh Khan.
Robin Bhatt who had scripted Aashiqui, Sadak, and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin recounted how he happened to write Baazigar, Robin shared that One fine day he received a call and was asked if he had watched the film ‘A Kiss Before Dying’ to which Robin responded with yes saying originally it was a novel, and he had read it and can surely make a film on it. Then he was told to write a screenplay as Abbas Mustan wanted to direct it. That’s how Baazigar was born.
