Veteran actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal reunited at the Cannes 2025 in absolute timeless style.
They were there more particularly for the screening of Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri and Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest.

Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri (Night and Day in the Forest), is a newly restored 4K version of the 1970 classic. The film was introduced by acclaimed director Wes Anderson, a long-time admirer of Ray’s cinema. The duo was also spotted at the red carpet of Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest.

Slipling into nostalgia and cinematic legacy, Sharmila Tagore looked radiant in a classic emerald green silk saree with a gold zari border. Her look was understated yet regal, completed with a gold clutch, delicate green earrings and her signature graceful poise. The half-up, half-down hairstyle with soft waves added a timeless charm.

Simi Garewal, making her red carpet debut at Cannes at 77, stunned in an all-white outfit. She wore an intricately embroidered long overcoat over a matching gown, adorned with a dramatic statement necklace. The monochromatic look was both bold and elegant.
Sharmila and Simi’s reunion image was shared by Vogue India and quickly went viral. Fans across generations celebrated the moment, calling it “iconic” and a “perfect tribute to Indian cinema’s golden era.”
Before the film’s screening, Sharmila Tagore’s pictures with daughter Saba Pataudi from the French Riviera also surfaced online. Saba captioned her Instagram post: “Cannes 2025! Ma n Me… moments to cherish (sic).”

In a conversation with the press members, Sharmila reflected on the enduring presence of Indian cinema at Cannes and went on to say that “Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar in 1946 was the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the precursor to the Palme d’Or.” She also praised Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which won the Grand Prix last year.
“Indian representation has always been there. Her film Devi was nominated in 1962 for Palme d’Or. There is an Indian pavilion as well. A lot of people showcase Indian films there. Our films have been recognised, and Cannes gives them a wider platform.
