Chennai Super Kings five-time IPL champions to have new investors
Reportedly, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is likely to get new investors within the next three years of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sources close to the developments opened up revealedow that a large Indian conglomerate has expressed its desire to get a stake in the franchise.
As per the people in the know, the Indian conglomerate that has evinced interest has a multi-dimensional business in India, along with multi-sports investments. The deal might be a minor stake, a major stake, or a complete takeover of five-time champions CSK.
As of now, the franchise is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), a publicly listed company. But, there are stakes for several others as well in the franchise. The India Cements Shareholders’ Trust, Sri Saradha Logistics Private Limited, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and Reliance Capital Trustee hold a stake in the franchise.
When the league started, it was India Cements that were the original owners of the franchise. However, in 2014, the franchise got merged with CSKCL being the separate entity. Narayanaswami Srinivasan, who was the Managing Director of India Cements, was the owner of the franchise back then.
A large Indian conglomerate has also evinced interest in having stake at
CSK.
There is no clarity of structure of the deal at this stage. It could be a complete takeover or majority stake at the franchise.
Notably, CSK are the joint-most successful franchise in the league. They have won the title five times in the league, all of which came under the leadership of MS Dhoni. The keeper-batter arguably is the major reason behind the franchise being the brand in world cricket.
MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of CSK in 2024, keeping an eye on the future. He passed on the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who hasn’t been able to make a mark in the league as a captain so far. In IPL 2025, the young batter got injured and Dhoni was given the responsibility to lead the team again.
However, the decision didn’t do any good as the franchise failed to qualify for the playoffs. They bagged the wooden spoon as they ended last on the points table.
