Heavy rainfall lashes Mumbai – effectuates waterlogging
Mumbailars woke up to heavy rain on Friday with forecasts suggesting the wet spell will continue through the week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city and adjoining districts for Friday warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
The IMD had predicted generally cloudy skies with intermittent heavy showers for Mumbai and its suburbs. It had said wind speeds might reach 40-50 kmph in some areas. The weather also prompted some airlines to issue advisory for flyers. The rain also led to traffic snarls in several areas. The weather department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday.
The suburbs have received more than 200 mm of rain over the past 48 hours, easing the rainfall deficit that had built up earlier in the month.
Tansa Becomes Third Lake To Overflow After Incessant Rain
It comes as good news and much relief for Mumbaikars as the Tansa Lake, one of the city’s seven key water sources started to overflow on Tuesday owing to the steady and strong rainfall in its catchment area over the past few days.
In the midst of the heavy rainfall, a massive traffic jam was reported on Western Express Highway at Vile Parle. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in the city over the next two days.
A massive protective wall and several houses collapsed behind Omega High School in the Khindipada area of Bhandup. The incident occurred on a densely populated hill approximately fifty feet high, where a large protective wall had been constructed. Continuous heavy rainfall caused cracks to form in the wall, eventually leading to its collapse and the destruction of multiple houses.
SpiceJet issue’s travel advisory for passengers
that in the wake of heavy rain in Mumbai, all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status.
Andheri Subway shut due to waterlogging and traffic were diverted to Gokhale and Thackeray Bridges.
Mumbai Traffic Police said both lanes of the Andheri Subway have been closed after water levels rose to around 2 to 2.5 feet.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai reported seven short-circuit incidents, 11 cases of tree or branch falls, and two partial house collapses in the last 24 hours.
