National Award jury Ashutosh Gowariker clarifies over “The Kerala Story’s”win

In the 71st National Film Awards announced on 1 August some wins led to applause, while others raised eyebrows. Amidst the most talked-about films was ‘The Kerala Story’, which won two major awards, Best Direction and Best Cinematography.
The controversial film hit the theatres in 2023. The film features Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, Siddhi Idnani, and others.

The Sudipto Sen”s directorial film sparked controversy right from its release. But now, with its double win at the National Awards, it has generated a stir again. Jury Chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker has stepped in to explain why the film was chosen and what led to this unexpected recognition.

While interacting with the media, period filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker first explained why Prasantanu Mohapatra won Best Cinematography.
It was very stark and realistic and never ever attempted to overpower the narrative – the images were created within the realm of things. So, we applauded that.

However the Kerala CM slammee the jury’s decision saying that even as the jury praised the film, the decision did not go down well with everyone.
