There have been some films after hitting the the theatres haven’t been successful, but, there are a few which have treasured in our hearts.Yes and it’s YRF’s “Mohabbatein” that wasn’t only successful at the box-office, but
re-defined love, rebellion and power of friendship.
It wasn’t just a movie; it was an emotion, a celebration of romance and values. And as it clocks 25-years of its release, fans are still humming its tunes and reliving its dialogues.
It’s none other than Mohabbatein, the 2000 released romantic drama that brought together stars in their own right Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in an indelible tale of love versus discipline.
Released on October 27, 2000, the film was Aditya Chopra directorial after his blockbuster debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
Set in the strict world of Gurukul, Mohabbatein narrated the story of a music teacher (Shah Rukh Khan) who challenges the authoritarian headmaster (Amitabh Bachchan) by teaching students the power of love.
Alongside the three main stars were six newcomers, Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Kim Sharma, Jugal Hansraj, Jimmy Shergill and Preeti Jhangiani, all portraying young lovers battling rules and traditions.
Even as the film turned out to be a massive hit, grossing around Rs 90 crore worldwide against a modest Rs 13–19 crore budget, fame didn’t smile equally on everyone.
The six young actors, regardless their incredible debut performances, couldn’t leave an indelible mark in Bollywood. Over time, most faded away from the limelight.
The only one who managed to sustain and reinvent himself was *Jimmy Shergill, who today enjoys success in both Bollywood and the Punjabi film industry, as well as on OTT platforms.
*Jugal Hansraj, once remembered as the shy lover in Mohabbatein, returned with appearances in Netflix’s Mismatched. He was also seen in Nadaniyaan alongside Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor.
*Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Kim Sharma and Preeti Jhangiani have largely stepped away from showbiz.
As “Mohabbatein” clocks its 25th year of its release, its message still rings true — “Some love stories…live forever.”
