Ameesha Patel secured the role of Jwala in Mangal Pandey: The Rising after Aamir Khan was impressed by her intelligence, having watched her BBC interview.
Following Aishwarya Rai’s exit, Aamir Khan who was impressed by Ameesha Patel’s intelligence having watched her interview in BBC supported her casting, and the two built rapport bonding over books and playing games amidst an interview setup in Delhi.
Ameesha replaced Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who departed the project after a disagreement with producers. They bonded during a pre-interview, playing Noughts and Crosses, which helped establish a rapport.
Earlier, Ameesha was deemed too “refined” for a rural role in Lagaan (which went to Gracy Singh), but that same “educated” persona helped her secure the Mangal Pandey role, she recalled.Ameesha highlighted this experience as an example of how acting opportunities in Bollywood can arise unexpectedly through rapport and perceived intelligence.
