New Delhi hit back at the Dutch Prime Minister’s allegations on minority rights and press freedom, asserting that India is a vibrant, inclusive democracy where every community thrives.
Amidst Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to The Hague Indian MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George
defended the country’s record. Officials highlighted that minorities represent a significant and growing portion of the population and that India’s civilizational history of religious coexistence speaks for itself.
As per the diplomat criticisms of India’s democracy and civil rights basically reflect a lack of understanding by the person asking the question. In response to concerns about smaller communities and Muslims, George cited demographic data stating that India’s minority population had grown from 11% at independence to over 20%, noting that every community thrives. Historical Pluralism: India was defended as a 5,000-year-old civilization where four major religions originated (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism) and where all major world faiths continue to flourish.
Dismissing claims of declining media freedom, the MEA highlighted India’s free speech guarantees, recent peaceful transitions of power, and high voter turnout.
