Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Y.S. Sharmila strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for gifting a packet of “Melody” toffees to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his diplomatic visit to Rome.
In a statement she condemned the gesture voicing it as an insane and insensitive display of showmanship.
She further went on to state that BJP leaders are distributing “Melody chocolates” while ordinary people across the country continue to suffer from rising prices of petrol, cooking gas, and essential commodities.
She highlighted that unemployment and severe shortages are actively gripping the nation, heavily impacting the poor, lower, and middle classes.
She slammed PM Modi for being too busy “enjoying and handing out chocolates for reels” rather than addressing domestic issues.
The toffee exchange occurred in
Rome when PM Modi playfully gifted the popular Indian candy to PM Meloni, directly acknowledging the internet’s viral “Melodi” nickname. While the wholesome gesture quickly spread across global social media and was celebrated by the candy’s manufacturer, Parle Products, it drew backlash from domestic opposition leaders over economic concerns.
