Lata Mangeshkar’s first iconic hit immortalized on screen by Madhubala continues to soothe souls

Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic breakthrough hit “Aayega Aanewala” from the 1949 film “Mahal” (77 years) was immortalized on screen by the enchanting Madhubala. Khemchand Prakash’s , hauntingly composed song captivated audiences, creating a benchmark in Indian playback singing. It cemented its place in listeners’ hearts for decades.

Prior to “Mahal”playback singers were rarely credited. When “Aayega Aanewala” turned out to be a massive sensation on the radio, eager fans inundated the station demanding to know the singer’s name, finally giving Lata Mangeshkar the widespread recognition she deserved.

The delicate and mysterious on-screen presence of 16-year-old Madhubala gave the song its visual identity, forever linking the two legends in the golden era of Bollywood.
