Torrential downpour engulfs the metropolis

Torrential downpour on Saturday marooned parts of Mumbai and the neighboring regions, triggering severe waterlogging, traffic snarls, and local transit disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city, warning of extreme rainfall and advising residents to stay home.

Major low-lying areas including Dadar, Sion, Kurla, and the Andheri subway witnessed massive inundation.
Versova, Marol, and Oshiwara previously logged upwards of 100 mm of rain.
Flooded roads and stalled vehicles severely crippled vehicular movement. Incidents like truck overhauls near the Kharghar Toll Plaza on the Sion-Panvel Highway have further compounded congestion.

Rail services and local bus networks were significantly impacted, leading to extremely slow and stranded commutes across the metropolitan area.

Most of the offices were a witness to thin attendance as employees found it difficult to commute due to transport problems since most parts of the metropolis were flooded including railway tracks.

The deep “maroon” and red alert warnings indicate the potential for breaches of 300 mm in accumulated rainfall, bringing nature’s fury directly to the Konkan coast. The incessant downpours have unfortunately resulted in tragic casualties and highlighted ongoing civic issues with garbage-clogged drains and open manholes.

Authorities are actively urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of inundated low-lying zones as civic teams work to clear debris
