The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on individuals assaulting healthcare professionals, remarking that those who disrespect the medical fraternity do not deserve bail.
A three-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Augustine George Masih made the observations while hearing a plea filed by Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre. Mhatre had challenged a Bombay High Court order that took suo motu cognizance and stayed the bail granted to him by a magistrate court in an assault case.
The case stems from an incident at Shastrinagar Hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra, where the corporator was captured on video physically assaulting on-duty doctors and medical staff following a dispute over treating a pregnant patient.
“You cannot imagine the trauma of a person when a mob attacks. You can go inside a hospital and hit any random person?” the bench remarked, strongly condemning the act of vigilantism. The apex court firmly supported the High Court’s intervention, underscoring that violence against medical workers warrants strict judicial accountability.
