The Government of Maharashtra has ordered a comprehensive, time-bound audit of all land parcels owned by churches and Christian missionary institutions. Triggered by a ₹300 crore land fraud in Nashik, this three-month state-wide survey aims to identify illegal encroachments, disputed titles, and unapproved property transfers dating back to the British era.
Reportedly, the decision was announced in the Legislative Assembly by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule after a motion was raised by BJP MLA Devayani Pharande. She highlighted a long-pending land dispute involving the Nashik Diocesan Trust Association Limited, which allegedly affected around 5,000 families.
The primary objectives of the audit include identifying jrregularities, scrutinizing post-Independence property transfers and leases to ensure they weren’t manipulated or misused.
Reclaiming encroachments by checking if land originally granted for public utility (such as schools and hospitals) has been unlawfully sold or developed for private, commercial use. Reviewing Historical Deeds by examining ownership records dating back to the colonial era to bring order to overall state land administration.
Broader Perspectives on the Audit- the government maintains that institutions with legally valid land titles and lawful transfers have nothing to worry about, and that the process is strictly to safeguard state and public rights.
However, the announcement has sparked concerns within the Christian community, as it follows a recent surge in disruptions and threats against prayer meetings.
Paul George expressed concerns regarding the timing and the selective nature of the government’s probe. Transparency in land records is important for any state, but the timing and selective nature of this announcement are deeply concerning.
It is ironic that while Christian institutions in Maharashtra are actively seeking protection from threats and violence Derrick Carassco questioned why the policy only focuses on a single religious minority, instead of auditing all public and religious organizations. Also Why not all religions organisation as well and each political party or political person why not each wealth made by politicians before and after getting position in government
