TMC rebel leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay met with
PM Modi in New Delhi on July 18, 2026,for discussion over the formal parliamentary recognition of his 20-member breakaway faction. This meeting coincided with Speaker Om Birla approving separate seating in the Lok Sabha for the rebel faction, which recently formed the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
Bandyopadhyay’s faction has petitioned the Speaker for formal recognition as the NCPI, a move the TMC is fiercely opposing while demanding the disqualification of the 20 MPs.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju officially invited Bandyopadhyay to the customary all-party meeting ahead of the Monsoon Session.
Meanwhile, the NCPI faction has expressed a desire to formally join and extend its support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
