Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Samik Bhattacharya raised a demand in the Rajya Sabha on Friday to officially change the name of West Bengal to ‘Paschim Banga’.
Speaking amidst the Parliamentary session, Bhattacharya argued that the current name ‘West Bengal’ carries a historical colonial baggage that needs to be discarded.
He emphasized that the state’s identity is deeply rooted in its cultural heritage, and restoring the name to ‘Paschim Banga’ would better reflect its historical context and the sentiments of the local population. The MP urged the Central Government to take immediate note of the matter and initiate the official process required for the state’s renaming.
