Amitabh Bachchan overcame brutal early rejections, including public humiliation, a rejected radio audition, and ten consecutive box office flops to become an icon of Indian cinema. By transforming harsh industry criticism into rigid professionalism and a fiery acting style, he forged the “Angry Young Man” persona from his early struggles.
However, this legendary transformation would not have been possible without visionary director Prakash Mehra widely recognized as the man responsible for cementing Bachchan’s status in the film industry. At a time when romantic heroes ruled Hindi cinema, Mehra took a massive gamble on a struggling actor whom financiers had completely written off. He cast Bachchan as Inspector Vijay Khanna in the 1973 cult classic
“Zanjeer”,.a raw action film that shattered box office records and permanently redefined Bollywood.
Amitabh never looked back.
Mehra went on to direct Bachchan in a string of iconic blockbusters like Muqaddar Ka Sikandar Laawaris Khoon Pasina Hera Pheri Namak Halaal and Sharaabi effectively providing the precise creative direction that shaped the brooding, intense screen image of the ultimate megastar.
Amitabh also recalled when a
director standing outside the gates cast a cold look his way and declared, ‘The cameras are dark today. Depart from this place.’
