Fifty years following the quiet fading of one of Indian cinema’s most defining and soulful voices, the nation pauses today to honor Mukesh Chand Mathur, universally known as Mukesh, on his 50th death anniversary. Renowned as “The Man with the Golden Voice”, Mukesh remains an immortal pillar of the golden era of Hindi film music, leaving behind an emotional resonance that continues to capture the hearts of millions across generations.
Mukesh carved a niche for himself with an inimitable vocal style characterized by deep pathos, raw sincerity, and tender vulnerability. He stepped into playback singing with the iconic track “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” for the film Pehli Nazar.
Over the next three decades, his soulful renditions became the definitive emotional heartbeat for legendary actors, most notably serving as the signature voice of the showman Raj Kapoor, alongside Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, and Dilip Kumar.From the carefree wanderlust of “Awara Hoon” and “Mera Joota Hai Japani” to the haunting introspection of “Dost Dost Na Raha” and the poetic romance of “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein,” Mukesh’s timeless melodies captured the joys, sorrows, and quiet dignity of the common man.
His extraordinary contribution was decorated with numerous accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the mesmerizing track “Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai” from the film Rajnigandha .
