The Government of Maharashtra has announced a temporary one-year exemption on enforcement actions against the sale of loose edible oil, providing immediate relief to traditional traders and small retailers across the state.The decision was finalized amidst a high-level meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and a delegation of oil merchants in Mumbai.
The policy shift follows recent regulatory crackdowns by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), headed by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, aimed at curbing adulteration and unsealed packaging.Acknowledging both public health standards and economic realities, Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized the need for a balanced approach.
As per reports, Chief Minister Fadnavis noted that low-income consumers still rely on loose oil, making it essential to balance legal compliance with practical challenges faced by citizens and shopkeepers.
Enforcement is suspended for 12 months without further extensions, allowing vendors time to adapt.
A panel of FDA officials and trade representatives will form guidelines and assist businesses.
Traders must use this period to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2011.
