The Government of Bangladesh has officially announced that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not be travelling to New Delhi, India, to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit.
Addressing recent speculations regarding the Prime Minister’s itinerary, official sources clarified that the invitation extended to Bangladesh was in its specific capacity as the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), rather than a direct, standalone state invitation.
While reaffirming Bangladesh’s deep respect for multilateral forums and its commitment to regional economic cooperation, the administration emphasized that an inaugural official visit by Prime Minister Rahman to India warrants a dedicated, comprehensive bilateral framework. The government maintains that a structured, standalone diplomatic engagement will better serve to address key mutual interests and strengthen bilateral ties between Dhaka and New Delhi, rather than brief interactions on the sidelines of a broader summit.
Bangladesh continues to highly value its partnership with India and looks forward to scheduling a mutually convenient time for a robust, formal bilateral visit in the near future.
