Celebrated Pakistani qawwali maestro and global music icon Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has publicly lauded Indian Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh for his exceptional rendition of the timeless classic qawwali “Sanson Ki Mala Pe”.
The high praise came amidst an exclusive meet-and-greet session held in Toronto, ahead of Khan’s highly anticipated concert, where he addressed the viral performance that has taken social media by storm.
Dosanjh recently scripted history at London’s Wembley Stadium as part of his Aura World Tour, becoming the first Punjabi artist to headline the prestigious global venue. During the milestone concert, Dosanjh delivered a soulful, emotional tribute to the late Sufi legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by performing his iconic composition, captivating thousands of fans who lit up the arena in unison. Acknowledging the immense challenge and pressure that comes with performing such a legendary track, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who is the nephew and musical heir of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, expressed his deep appreciation for Dosanjh’s artistry and respect for the craft.
In his official statement, Nusrat remarked that it would be an understatement to say that even the biggest artists get nervous while singing Khan Sahab’s songs, but Diljit has done complete justice to it, singing it with absolute sincerity and with all his heart to the best of his ability. He emphasized that the sincerity was fully visible and audible, earning his heartfelt appreciation.
The cross-border artistic recognition highlights the unifying power of music, as Dosanjh stepped away from his usual contemporary hip-hop and Punjabi pop repertoire to deliver a traditional, melody-driven performance that respected the spiritual soul of the original qawwali. Music enthusiasts and industry insiders worldwide have celebrated this mutual respect between two generational icons, reinforcing that musical legacies transcend geographical boundaries.
