Jaya Prada’s bittersweet melody of peak stardom and private sorrow

Jaya Prada’s marriage became one of the most talked-about personal chapters in the life of a woman who was at the height of her film career.

She married film producer Shrikant Nahata in 1986, when she was already one of the leading stars of Indian cinema. Nahata was already married to Chandra Nahata and had children from that marriage. The fact that he married Jaya without divorcing his first wife became the centre of intense public discussion.

The actress later explained that their bond grew from camaraderie. Amidst a difficult period involving income-tax problems, she said Shrikant stood by her, supported her and became someone she deeply trusted. She described their relationship as gradually turning into love.

The marriage also brought considerable emotional and social pressure. Jaya spoke publicly about being labelled the “other woman” and about the pain she experienced after the marriage.

Jaya and Shrikant did not have biological children together. She later adopted Samrat, whom she has publicly described as her son.

There is also a date discrepancy in published accounts: most biographies and major media profiles place the marriage in 1986, while a later report quoting Jaya’s 2005 interview gives 22 February 1989.

Behind the glamour of Jaya Prada’s extraordinary film career was a deeply complicated personal story.
