Daya Nayak mourns Nana Patekar’s passing

Retired Mumbai Police Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and renowned encounter specialist Daya Nayak has released an emotional public tribute following the sudden demise of veteran actor Nana Patekar at the age of 75.
Patekar, celebrated for his raw intensity and deeply human performances, immortalized Nayak’s real-life grit on the big screen as Inspector Sadhu Agashe in the critically acclaimed 2004 crime drama Ab Tak Chhappan. Reflecting on their decades-long bond, which spanned over 32 years from a fan-idol encounter to a close brotherhood, Nayak shared his profound disbelief over their final conversation just days prior:

“I can’t quite believe you are gone. We spoke just a few days ago, and somehow the thought that that was our last conversation feels impossible to believe. Such a wonderfully versatile actor, and the extraordinary way you inhabited every character you played. You inspired me while playing a character inspired by me. You didn’t simply portray a police officer you made people understand the person behind the uniform, the pressures, the humanity and what it truly means to be a police officer. And you did it with such honesty and depth.”

Nayak emphasized that beyond Patekar’s towering cinematic legacy lay a deeply generous, warm, and dependable friend who understood the grassroots struggles of a son-of-the-soil.

Recalling the months Patekar spent shadowing and consulting him to master the nuances of an encounter specialist, Nayak noted that the actor’s brilliance stemmed from his rare ability to strip away the artifice and reveal the beating heart of the human experience.
The heartfelt tribute concludes with a poignant farewell from one brother-in-arms to another:

“Till we meet again, Nana, You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered always”
