Bhutan dedicates sacred stupa to PM Modi in historic diplomatic honor

In a powerful testament to the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has personally dedicated a sacred monument to Indian Prime Minister Modi. Named Jangchub Chorten No. 76, the Stupa of Enlightenment stands as a direct tribute to the Indian leader, with its specific numbering serving as a special nod to his recent 76th birthday and his steadfast support for the Himalayan kingdom.

The monument was unveiled during a formal consecration ceremony at the Gelephu Mindfulness City. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju officially represented the Government of India, joining His Majesty the King, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and senior officials to reveal the commemorative plaque and express India’s deep gratitude for the historic honor.
The consecrated structure is part of Project 108, a monumental spiritual and volunteer-driven initiative that achieved the historic feat of constructing 108 stupas simultaneously in less than nine hours. The massive effort mobilized more than 40,000 volunteers, artisans, and monks. Standing 15 meters tall, the 108 stupas span an 11.7-kilometer stretch along the banks of the Aie (Mau) River, seamlessly weaving spiritual heritage into the framework of Bhutan’s upcoming mega-city project near the Indian border.

This rare and profound gesture reinforces the uniquely close neighborhood ties between New Delhi and Thimphu, marking another milestone in their shared commitment to regional peace, prosperity, and cultural harmony.
