Looking back: Rakhee married Gulzar second time did not divorce special connection with Yash Chopra
Gulzar, the renowned lyricist who’s lyrics spell magic and magician of words who has and continues even today to make millions of hearts beat with his songs had a crush on Rakhee.
For Raakhee 70’s was a peak time for her as she was receiving lot of assignments. The actor had a massive fan following and one of them was Gulzar Saheb who made everyone crazy about him.
It finally emerged as a love between Gulzar and Rakhee. But, the love story was quite different from other Bollywood stories.
Rakhi made her Bollywood debut with Dharmendra in ‘Jeevan Mrityu’. At that time around, Gulzar started his career by penning lyrics for film ‘Bandini’. Prior to meeting Gulzar, Rakhee was a victim of broken marriage. She had tied the knot to Bengali film director Ajay Biswas when she was just 16. Ironically, this marriage did not last for long and in a span of 2 years both of them separated their ways.
Whereas Gulzar was mesmerized by Rakhee’s beauty and acting. Rakhi also showed liking for Gulzar and their love gradually blossomed. Gulzar and Rakhi entered marital bliss in the year 1973. Many big stars like Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna were present at the grand wedding.
There was a condition that after marriage Rakhee will not work in films. As time passed by she became a mother to a daughter whom they named Meghna Gulzar
However, a year after Meghna was born, the couple parted ways. But there was no divorce. The reason for the separation was said to be a condition of Gulzar that he wasn’t in favour of Rakhee acting in films after marriage.
Rakhi had accepted this condition with the hope that she might be able to convince Gulzar after marriage. But she expressed her desire to work in films produced by Gulzar. But it never worked out.
There were many producers who wanted to cast Rakhee in their films, but due to Gulzar’s condition, rejected all such offers.
But one night something happened which completely shattered their relationship. Gulzar was in a shoot for Aandhi produced by J Om Prakash and directed by him. Rakhee was also with him at that time. But, One night asvthe entire cast and crew of the film were sitting together, they spotted Sanjeev Kumar the lead actor of the film under intoxication. In that inebriated mood, he stopped Suchitra Sen, heroine in the film from entering the room and held her hand. This didn’t go well with Suchitra who lost her cool at Sanjeev’s behaviour. The scenario turned bad that Gulzar had to intervene. Later, the director of ‘Aandhi’ even went to leave his actor to the room. Rakhi did not like this and objected. Gulzar was very irritated when his wife raised objections and according to media reports, he even raised his hand on his wife. Rakhi got badly broken following this incident.
But the next morning turned a new leaf for Rakhee. Actually, Yash Chopra wanted to cast Rakhee i in his film ‘Kabhi Kabhi’. For this, he was going to take Gulzar sahab’s consent that Rakhee had already said yes for the film. Just then, as soon as the actress signed the film ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, her and Gulzar Sahab’s relationship ended. But the daughter of this couple Meghna was so young that this couple never divorced for hervdaughter’s sake. They lived separately for years, but even as of date, the couple is married.
