“1942: A Love Story”
In a recent media interaction filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra recalled that after watching Shah Rukh Khan in the film Maya Memsaab he offered him 1942: A Love Story.
Notably, for three decades both Shah Rukh Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra planned to collaborate, but couldn’t happen.
The filmmaker in a chat at Kellog School of Management, revealed an interesting that Shah Rukh was the first choice for his 1994 romantic film 1942: A Love Story and that Shah Rukh Khan had a history with him.
Eventually Vinod signed Anil Kapoor for 1942: A Love Story. which featured Manisha Koirala opposite her. Interestingly, Madhuri Dixit was initially offered her part. 1942: A Love Story also starred Jackie Shroff.
Vidhu also offered Shah Rukh the title role in his 2003 production, Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut Munna Bhai MBBS. However, Shah Rukh had to opt out of the project due to surgery. He had told him you go, take six months, one year whatever. But when you come back, my film is the first one you’re doing. Due to complications, he didn’t do the film.
Sanjay Dutt was initially signed to do Jimmy Sherigill’s part in the film. Shah Rukh was also offered another Vidhu production, Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots, but he opted out again. Aamir Khan eventually played the character of Rancho. Years later, Shah Rukh and Rajkumar collaborated on the film Dunki last year. However, he hasn’t done a film with Vidhu Vinod Chopra yet.
