Malayalees rang in the Malayalam New Year 2024
Kollavarsham
Malayalees celebrated the Malayalam New Year Kollavarsham on August 17. It marks the start of the new year in the Malayalam calendar and celebrated on the first day of the month of Chingam. It is pertinent to note that Malayalam calendar, an ancient lunisolar system, is integral to the cultural and religious practices in Kerala. Reports have also stated that many Keralites also celebrate Vishu as their New Year. Vishu occurs at the beginning of the month of Medam, typically in April, and represents a distinct celebration of the New Year.
Reports also indicate that the Malayalam New Year signals the start of a new harvest season in the state. On this day, people decorate their homes, visit temples for prayers, and prepare traditional dishes.
