Govt initiates action against against 18 OTT Platforms for breach of content guidelines

The Government in its decisive move has initiated action against 18 OTT Platforms for breach of content guidelines.
This was revealed by the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting
L.Murugan in the Rajya Sabha.

Reacting to concerns over digital piracy on these platforms, Murugan emphasised that the established protocols are in place to monitor OTT content.

However, he went on to admit of the Government’s limited authority over age-appropriate content verification, leading to the adoption of self-certification and content classification relying heavily on parental guidance. On cinema hall piracy, Murugan pointed out to the recent amendment to the Cinema Amendment Act 2023, aimed at protecting producers from piracy causing an annual loss of Rs.20,000 crore to the movie and OTT Platforms.

Additionally, the Minister made a note of the IT rules of 2021 address copyright and trademark infringement for OTT content, with an ethics code incorporating a three-tier mechanism for tackling such issues.

Meanwhile, a nodal officer has also been appointed at the Central Board Of Film Certification Office to address grievances concerning cinema piracy.
