Maha govt issues advisory as HMPV becomes major cause of concern

It is learned that the acute respiratory infections was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001.

It is a common respiratory virus likely to cause infections in the lower respiratory tract (similar to cold symptoms). This seasonal illness typically occurs amidst late winter or early spring, resembling RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and influenza.

Notedly, no cases of HMPV have been detected in Maharashtra as of now.

Public health authorities in the state have analyzed respiratory infection data, and there has been no significant increase in December 2024 compared to 2023. However, as a precaution, citizens are advised to follow guidelines for prevention.

DOs as safety measure:
*Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing.
*Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers.
*Maintain distance from public places
*If experiencing fever, cough, or cold symptoms.
Stay hydrated and eat nutritious food.
Ensure adequate ventilation in all places to reduce infections.

DON’Ts:
*Avoid shaking hands and Do not reuse tissues or handkerchiefs.
*Avoid contact with sick individuals.
Refrain from frequently touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
*Avoid spitting in public places.
*Do not self-medicate; consult a doctor before taking medicines.
*There is no cause for concern regarding the emergence of HMPV in China. Adequate precautions are being taken, and unnecessary panic should be avoided.

However, given the circumstances, ensure enhanced surveillance in your areas and submit regular reports on cases of fever, cough, and influenza-like illnesses (ILI).
