Yash Chopra, was already celebrated for redefining Hindi cinema
This unusual photograph offers a glimpse into the camaraderie shared by some of Indian cinema’s finest talents.
Yash Chopra, already celebrated for redefining Hindi cinema with emotionally charged narratives, brought together a powerhouse ensemble for Trishul, including stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, and Poonam Dhillon.
In Trishul, Sanjeev Kumar played the role of R.K. Gupta, a wealthy and ambitious industrialist whose betrayal of his first love leads to a lifelong vendetta from his illegitimate son, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan. Shashi Kapoor added charm and balance as Shekhar Gupta, Gupta’s legitimate son, while Rakhee delivered a sensitive performance as Geeta, caught in the emotional storm.
Yash Chopra’s vision for Trishul was to portray the impact of broken relationships and unfulfilled promises across generations. The film stood out not just for its powerful story but also for its sharp dialogues (penned by Salim–Javed), memorable music by Khayyam, and its emotional resonance with audiences who related to its themes of justice and redemption.
Trishul became one of the biggest hits of 1978 and is today remembered as a milestone in the careers of everyone involved — a brilliant blend of high drama, emotional conflict, and spectacular performances, all brought alive under Yash Chopra’s masterful direction.
Both Yash Chopra and BR Chopra were truly great filmmakers and good human beings.
