Taapsee Pannu finds it “difficult” to get film like “Dunki”
Actress Taapsee Pannu has called roles in major commercial films like Rajkumar Hirani’s
Dunki as a rare “gift” rather than a regular occurrence in her career.
In her recent media interaction, the actress went on to explain that such opportunities are hard to secure since the industry doesn’t consider her as a traditional “mainstream, commercial, viable heroine.
She considers Dunki a reward for her decade-long dedication to content-driven, socially relevant, and unconventional cinema.
Industry..She noted that it is a “struggle” to get cast in big-ticket projects not produced by her, as industry insiders often struggle to visualize her in “glammed up” roles.
The actress further went on to explain that for large films featuring big male stars, she is often told she is being cast as a “favor,” which sometimes results in lower pay compared to projects where she is the lead.
She highlighted that in a majority of cases, male leads have a significant influence on casting the female lead, choosing someone who fits a particular “trending” image.
Notwithstanding these challenges, she expressed pride in her identity as an actress who has built her own space in the industry through performance-driven roles.
Notedly Taapsee currently is being showered praise for her performance in “Assi”. Amidst the interaction she described Dunki a gift for doing films like Assi and Gandhari which has given her space and identity in the industry. So, this is her reality. Dunki is a gift she received for these 10 years.
She further went on to add that she doesn’t how long it will take for her to get another one. It’s a struggle because they still have to come to terms with, ‘Oh, they have to show her all glammed up.’
Further adding that she started her career in the South with massy films. And began Hindi career with David Dhawan. It doesn’t get more commercial and in-your-face than that. Then she has collaborated with Anubhav Sinha and Anurag Kashyap. It’s a very crazy choice of directors.she knows what gave her a certain audience. It might be small, but glad she earned those people’s trust. Not every actress has that privilege. So, this is her home ground.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki is a comedy-drama based on the illegal immigration technique known as “donkey flight”. The film featured Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role alongside Taapsee, Boman Irani, Anil Grover and Vikram Kochhar. It also featured Vicky Kaushal in a cameo. Despite mixed reviews, the film emerged as a box office success, collecting ₹454 crore worldwide.
Assi is a courtroom drama directed by Anubhav Sinha, starring Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha under the banners of Benaras Mediaworks and T-Series Films, the film also stars Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in key roles. The film opened to mixed-to-positive reviews and has so far collected ₹5.75 crore at the domestic box office.
