Before the song”Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” from the 1993released film “Khal Nayak” was banned, “Dum Maro Dum”
song from the Dev Anand starrer
“Hare Rama Hare Krishna”released in 1971 was banned by Doordarshan and All India Radio.
The reason being that the song was deemed to promote drug culture (hippies smoking chillum) and was considered against Indian cultural values, leading to its ban by All India Radio and censorship on Doordarshan.
Regardless the film aiming to show the negative impact of drugs, the song’s popularity was viewed as glorifying the lifestyle, leading to its removal from the film during television broadcasts. The song was sung by Asha Bhosle and composed by R.D. Burman.
Additionally, amidst the 1975–1977 Emergency, all of Dev Anand’s films were banned from Doordarshan because he refused to support the government, though this was a ban on the actor’s work generally rather than a single song.
