Looking back: When Smita Patil wanted to be traditionally attired when she shifts to the ‘next level

Indian Cinema’s legendary actress Smita Patil’s intensely personal wish for her final farewell was to be sent-off as a “Suhagan” (a married woman), a poignant desire that reflected her traditional values rehardless her modern cinematic image.

Her makeup artist, Deepak Sawant, honored this request, stating she often told him and her mother, “Mujhe suhagan banake leke jana” (Take her away dressed as a married woman).

She desired to be adorned in traditional bridal makeup and attire when she departs to the ‘immortal’ world.

Afterher death in 1986 at age 31, her mother specifically entrusted Deepak Sawant to fulfill this wish, which he did before her funeral.
This gesture represented her desire to leave with dignity and grace, embodying the traditional symbol of a Suhagan.

This poignant wish showcased her sensitivity and intense connection to cultural traditions, often remembered by those close to her as a profoundly moving final chapter in her life. 31 was not an age to die. Perhaps God had
other plans set for the legendary actress.
