Aruna Irani reflects on her silent, twice-won battle with breast cancer

Legendary actress Aruna Irani bravely fought and defeated breast cancer twice, keeping her harrowing health journey largely private before speaking about her experience.

Aruna Irani was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. When a lump was discovered, she underwent a successful surgery to remove it. However, out of a fear of the physical side effects (such as hair loss) and a desire to continue working, she refused the doctors’ recommendation to undergo chemotherapy, relying only on oral medication and hormone therapy.
The actress later admitted that skipping chemotherapy the first time was a mistake. In March 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic, her cancer relapsed. Taking the situation head-on, she underwent full and rigorous treatment this time around, which included radiation, surgery, and a full round of chemotherapy.

Having battled and overcome the disease a second time, Aruna Irani has recounts her experience to inspire others. She emphasizes the vital importance of never ignoring early symptoms, following medical advice rather than skipping vital treatments like chemotherapy, and prioritizing one’s health above all else.

Today, at 79, she remains a symbol of immense strength and continues to work in the entertainment industry with inspiring energy.
