A Legend in filmmaking Satyajit Ray offered Asha Parekh a role in his masterpiece “Kanchanjunga”, a regret she considers the biggest of her career. The missed collaboration stemmed from a scheduling conflict, even though the two shared a profound meeting about art and cinema during Ray’s visit to Mumbai.

While strolling along the Darjeeling Mall, Satyajit Ray was struck by a portrait of Asha Parekh displayed in a local photo studio.
He finally tracked down the young star and traveled to Mumbai to pitch the role to her directly. She later recalled “trembling like a leaf” with excitement amidst the long drive to meet him.

Alrhough Asha Parekh evinced strong desire to be part of the film, she ultimately had to turn down the opportunity due to prior date commitments made to other producers.
Years later, veteran actor Shammi Kapoor helped Ray secure resources in Kolkata when the filmmaker faced production challenges, a gesture the director was deeply moved by.
