When Dimple Khanna returned to acting with “Saagar”

The 1985 released film “Saagar” marked Dimple Khanna’s comeback. It’s a visually stunning romantic drama and a tragic tale of sacrifice. The film, weaves a classic, emotional love triangle set against a picturesque coastal village. It follows a humble local fisherman, a wealthy outsider, and the woman caught between them.
The movie is powered by powerhouse performance headlined by Dimple Kapadia, Kamal Haasan, and Rishi Kapoor—alongside breathtaking cinematography.

The story centers on a tight-knit, rustic fishing community standing up against the cruel designs of a capitalistic villain and a classist matriarch, though it exacts a supreme sacrifice from its most beloved character.

Director Ramesh Sippy, hailing from a legendary film family, was looking for creative redemption. Having delivered the monumental blockbuster “Sholay”in 1975, Sippy’s subsequent releases,
“Shaan released in 1980 “Shakti”released in 1982, had underperformed at the box office.

However with “Saagar” he aimed to rediscover his stylistic storytelling mojo. To achieve this, he reunited the hit on-screen pair of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia from
“Bobby” relessed in 1973 and paired them with the acting powerhouse from the South, Kamal Haasan.

The film also features a stellar supporting cast including Nadira, Saeed Jaffrey, Madhur Jaffrey, Shaffi Inamdar, A.K. Hangal, Sharat Saxena, Satish Kaushik, and Goga Kapoor. The script was written by Javed Akhtar, produced by G.P. Sippy, and features an iconic soundtrack.

The unforgettable music was composed by R.D. Burman with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. The timeless playback singing was handled by Kishore Kumar, Shailendra Singh, S.P. Balasubramaniam, Lata Mangeshkar, and Asha Bhosle. Finally, the film’s visual flair is credited to the choreography of P.L. Raj and Kamal Haasan, and the expert cinematography of
S.M. Anwar.
