Legendary playback singer Udit Narayan celebrated the silver jubilee of two of Indian cinema’s biggest musical blockbusters: Lagaan and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Both films unexpectedly released on the exact same day in 2001. Narayan was the voice behind massive hits in both, including Mitwa from Lagaan and Main Nikla Gaddi Leke from Gadar.
Marking the 25th anniversary of these monumental releases, the singer opened up about the surreal experience of contributing to historic cinematic clashes, Narayan stated he feels incredibly lucky to have been part of two films that created such massive box office madness.
His renditions were highly celebrated, with Mitwa from Lagaan earning him his first prestigious National Award. From Gadar, songs like Main Nikla Gaddi Leke, Musafir Jaane Wale, and Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava are still heavily requested at his live shows. He credited the immense success of these soundtracks to the phenomenal teams involved, noting that Lagaan featured AR Rahman’s music with Javed Akhtar’s lyrics, while Gadar featured music by Uttam Singh and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
