Political interference allegations deepen AMMA crisis

The crisis in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has worsened, with actors Mallika Sukumaran and Lakshmipriya resigning from its primary membership following the en masse resignation of the entire 17-member executive committee.

The mass resignations followed a stormy annual general body meeting marked by heated exchanges over annual reports, financial accounts, and internal disputes.

President Shwetha Menon and the entire 17-member executive committee stepped down. Menon also resigned her primary membership in the association.
The fallout has widened into a public dispute among women members, with allegations and counter-allegations regarding the organization’s management.
Veteran actresses Mallika Sukumaran and actress Lakshmipriya, vice-president, have completely severed ties with the body, citing a lack of support for fairness and unresolved internal agendas.

An ad-hoc committee of nine members, headed by actor-MLA Ramesh Pisharody, has been tasked with running AMMA’s affairs and scheduling fresh elections within the next four months.
