Andy Burnham set to become next UK Prime Minister

Andy Burnham is on the brink of becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On the first day of nominations (July 9, 2026) to succeed outgoing leader Keir Starmer, Burnham secured the backing of 322 Labour MPs.

This support from 80% of the parliamentary party makes it mathematically impossible for any rival to secure the 81 signatures needed to enter the race. With no contest, he will be crowned leader on July 16 and officially take office at 10 Downing Street on July 20.

MPs and commentators note that Burnham’s overwhelming support from across the party reflects a widespread desire for a new direction in British politics.
As per BBC, that is the circuit breaker he is offering: power out of Westminster, an economy rewired for ordinary people, and good growth in every postcode. But months of internal Labour politics isn’t what the country needs right now.
